MEPAL: Teenage girl dies after car ends up in Fenland ditch

ATEENAGE girl died in hospital last night after a car she was in hit a pylon and ended upside down in a Fenland ditch.

The 16-year-old, believed to be from Sutton, near Ely, died in Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Police have not yet released her name.

She was a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver, a male, had released himself from the vehicle before fire crews arrived.

He was also taken to hospital to be checked over and released.

The single-vehicle collision happened on the A142 at Mepal, about half a mile from the Mepal Outdoor Centre.

The vehicle had collided with an electricity pylon and ended upside down. A small fire also occurred in the vehicle.

Fire crews from Chatteris, Sutton and Huntingdon extinguished the fire and released the girl using specialist cutting equipment.

They then assisted paramedics with CPR.

Police have appealed for information about the incident, which happened at about 8.20pm. Anyone with information should call 0845 456 4564.
