A 76-year-old woman was punched several times and left on the pavement by a robber who stole her handbag.

The victim was walking along Almond Drive, March, at about 6pm on Tuesday (August 26) when she was grabbed from behind.

The youth grabbed her handbag and then punched her several times to the head, forcing her into a fence and leaving her on the ground.

He ran off in the direction of Gaul Road while nearby residents came to the woman's aid and called police.

Officers were on the scene swiftly and searched the area but to no avail.

The woman, who is from March, was not seriously injured but was very shaken by the ordeal.

The mugger was described as 18 to 25, six foot tall, and was wearing a grey hooded jacket with a yellow or orange band on the hood.

Detective Sergeant David Simpson, Wisbech Police Station, said: "This was a nasty and cowardly attack on a vulnerable woman who was making her way home.

"I am keen to catch the man responsible and would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to consider whether they have information that could help the inquiry."

Anyone with information should contact Det Sgt Simpson on 0845 456 456 4, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
