A CAMBRIDGESHIRE Army officer from March is deploying to Afghanistan as part of a Joint Force Support Headquarters.

The unit will ensure that troops on the frontline in Afghanistan have everything they need to do their job.

Major Nigel "Spence" Spencer will work alongside colleagues from the RAF and Navy to provide them with everything from buttons and bullets to food and fuel or tents and tanks.

"We've been doing a lot of training, we are well prepared and ready to go," said the 44 year old former Regimental Sergeant Major who commissioned from the ranks. "It's not my first time out there so I understand the situation and feel comfortable and am looking forward to the role."

Spence, who is from March, joined the Army and became a Royal Engineer after leaving Duston Upper School in 1981.

He has earnt an MBE for operational duties and is undertaking his 14th tour having served in Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia, the Falklands and Northern Ireland.

This deployment will be his third to Afghanistan. He is married to Debs and has two children Gemma aged 21 and Ben aged 16. Away from army life he has enjoyed success in off-shore power boating.

Joint Force Support Headquarters, which is based in Kandahar, has more than one hundred military personnel from the Army, RAF and Navy working within it.

Their role in theatre is bring into Afghanistan the items and equipment needed by UK forces and then deliver them to the right places and the right times. This ranges from ammunition to medical supplies and larger items such as weapons and vehicles.
