A MAN in his 60s is in intensive care with head injuries after an accident at a warehouse in Wisbech.

The man was believed to have been working on his own at the warehouse in Leverington Road when the accident happened. He was found unconscious next to a forklift truck.

He was rushed to Cambridge in the police helicopter in a critical condition and conveyed from Marshall’s airport to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Magpas volunteer consultant anaesthetists Dr Jeurgen Klein and Dr Clare Hayes-Bradley, along with critical care paramedic Dan Cody and pilot Chris Sheriff, were flown by air ambulance from Magpas’ base at RAF Wyton.

Deborah Florence, Magpas’ spokeswoman, said “Due to time of the incident and the fading light the air ambulance had to leave the scene.

“Magpas requested that the Cambridgeshire Police helicopter arrive at the scene so they could convey the patient and the Emergency Medical Team to Addenbrooke’s. Magpas with Cambridgeshire Constabulary operates the only Civil Aviation Authority-approved night HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) with doctors in the UK.”

When the Magpas team arrived, they anaesthetised and resuscitated the patient before accompanying him to hospital.

Ms Florence added: “All the emergency services worked well together at the scene. The Magpas team did everything they could and have given the patient the best possible chance of making a good recovery.

“With an incident like this it is essential expert medical care from Magpas’ charity’s team is on hand to make sure the patient receives the right treatment at the scene and is then transferred to the right hospital for the type of injuries sustained.

“It is through our close working partnership with the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity, Cambridgeshire Police Air Operations Unit and the East of England Ambulance Service Trust that we are able to deliver such a rapid and coordinated response to anywhere in the East of England.”
