A man has been charged with causing death by careless driving while over the limit after a pedestrian was killed during a collision in Wisbech yesterday (March 21).

Michael Johnson, 51, of Waterlees Road in Wisbech, has also been charged with causing death by driving a vehicle otherwise than in accordance with his licence.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (March 23).

Arturas Matezevicius, 49, of Lilac Close, Wisbech, was walking in Wistaria Road when he was hit at around 10.20am yesterday.

He died at the scene.

The road was closed and motorists asked to avoid the area or expect delays following the incident.

An East of England ambulance spokesman said: “We received a call to reports of a serious RTC involving a pedestrian on Wisteria Road, Wisbech.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance officer, and Magpas air ambulance to assist.

“Medics were on scene within two minutes of the call to treat the pedestrian but sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family involved at this time.”
