A MAN has been arrested for drugs offences after police found a quantity of cannabis in his possession when they stopped him for illegal off-road motorcycling.

The 27-year-old was halted by police at around 1.30pm yesterday in Trinity Road, St John’s Fen End, after receiving reports of a man riding on a public track.

The motorcyclist, from the Downham area, was subsequently stopped and searched by police who found drugs in his possession.

Following further police checks it was also discovered that the man was wanted for failing to appear at court in Cambridgeshire for a drink-driving offence.

He was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis and remanded in custody to appear at court today.

Sgt Sam Pontin of the Terrington Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This is a perfect example of people in the community acting as our eyes and ears, helping us detect crime and keep their neighbourhood safe.

“Off-road bikes have been a persistent problem in this area and it’s thanks to the prompt actions of local residents that allowed us to make this arrest.”

A number of complaints about off-road motorcycling have been made by residents in Tilney St Lawrence and Magdalen in recent weeks.

Riders must wear adequate safety equipment and have permission from the land owner to ride on private land.
