MEDICAL charity Magpas' newest first responder group has been set up in Fenland, after it was awarded £3,000 from Roddons Housing Association.

The money, awarded from the housing association's community fund, has enabled the community first responder scheme to start new groups in Friday Bridge and Wisbech.

The Friday Bridge scheme has now been set up and Magpas is currently looking for volunteers to become community first responders in Wisbech.

Roddons' assistant director, Fiona Bebbington, said: "Magpas is a really worthy cause and we were really pleased to be able to support their vital work in our communities."

Lorna Hayes, Magpas' community first responder manager, said: "We are very grateful to Roddons for their support. These groups will save lives for many years to come and the help we have received from the housing association in getting them off the ground has been vital."

First responders are volunteers who receive training from Magpas and carry medical kit bags including breathing apparatus and an automatic defibrillator.

As they are community based they can arrive promptly to tend to a patient until an ambulance arrives.

n Anybody wishing to volunteer should contact Lorna Hayes on 01480 371060.
