COULD Scruff, at the ripe old age of 147, be the oldest dog in the world?

The canine world was buzzing last night as a Fenland woman waited to see if her wire haired terrier/Patterdale cross is the new world record holder.

Owner Sheila Garner said she would be proud if Scruff, who was 21 in doggie years or 147 in human years on Wednesday, becomes the title holder.

The doggy world has become engrossed in the saga of who owns the oldest dog after the death of Otto from Shropshire who died aged 20 from stomach cancer.

Sheila , of Glendon Gardens, Leverington, spotted a notice in a vets asking for a good home for Scruff after she had been taken in by a dog warden. Her own dog had only just been put to sleep.

Sheila said: "She is deaf and has slight arthritis in one leg but apart from that she is in good health. She is very slim and enjoys two walks a day. Her only treat is two biscuits every night before she goes to bed.
