The life and work of Joseph Medworth, one of Wisbech’s most influential town developers, will be celebrated at a church service this Saturday (October 13).

The service, which starts at 6pm at St Peter and Paul’s parish church in Wisbech, celebrates the work of Joseph Medworth whose reshaping of the town centre created the Georgian Crescent, the regency villa we all know as Wisbech Castle and other handsome buildings.

“It is now more than two hundred years since Mr Medworth was remodelling our town,” said the Revd canon Matthew Bradbury.

“But his buildings remain as one of the most graceful town centres in the region.”

The Clarkson Singers will be bringing their music to the service and a talk on ‘the man who built the Crescent’ will be given by Aldo Ierubino.

Joseph Medworth was the son of Simon Medworth, a ropemaker, and Anna Lampson. He was born in Wisbech in 1752. He married Sarah Fisher in 1775 at Wisbech St.Peter Church.

He moved to London and became a bricklayer and returned to Wisbech in 1793.
