Upgrades to junctions on the A47 and better traffic management in the town centre are key improvements identified in Wisbech's transport strategy.

Better traffic management and signals on the Lynn Road, Churchill Road and Cromwell Road up to Freedom Bridge could see improved traffic flow on the A1101 and B198 as key routes in and out of Wisbech.

The first step towards this will be to consider what method of traffic management should be used at these important junctions.

And an updated traffic modelling study to see what options are available to improve movement around the Freedom Bridge roundabout is also considered essential.

The report acknowledges that existing traffic pressures on the roundabout cause problems on nearby roads and the transport network around Wisbech town centre.

Some work has previously been carried out to look at improving the roundabout but more is needed to determine what the best option is. But this will be a long-term part of the transport strategy.

Measures to improve traffic flow and safety on the A1101 Leverington Road and also the residential areas of Peatlings Lane and West parade are also included in the transport strategy.

The report acknowledges that both West Parade and Peatlings Lane are increasingly being used as an alternative to the congested A1101 and suggests that measures are needed to ensure traffic is directed onto appropriate roads.

The first step for both this and improvements to the A1101 Leverington Road is to conduct a study and produce a list of relevant measures.

A new road at Boleness Road/New Bridge Lane will also help address issues with east to west movement on the wider road network.

Work is needed with the Highways Agency to build a case for developing this new link road, which would connect with the A47. It is anticipated that it will be a developer led solution and again is in the long-term plan.

New housing plans to the east of Wisbech are likely to put pressure on the existing A47 junction with Broad End Road and it is proposed that any upgrade to this junction should be linked in with homes developments.

The report points out that studies have shown that a roundabout would be the best solution to accommodate any extra traffic from Wisbech caused by new housing developments to the east, but a feasibility study will be needed to decide where to locate it.

Improvements to A47 junctions from the A141 to A198 Lynn Road are needed to help reduce delays on the busy trunk road.

Both Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council will work with the A47 to try to get these key junctions improved.
