PATIENTS at Queen Elizabeth Hospital are set to benefit from an array of high-tech gadgets, thanks to the fund-raising efforts of the Robert Foot Leukaemia Fund.

A total of £75,000 has been raised since the charity was set up in 2002, and on Monday members from the trust met staff at the hospital to donate £20,000 of new equipment.

The charity was set up following the death of 33-year-old Robert Foot in 2002 after a two-year battle with a form of leukaemia rarely found in adults.

He was a civilian political adviser for the Ministry of Defence, whose work in Sierra Leone earned him an OBE in the 2001 New Year's Honours List.

The memorial fund was set up by his family and the following year saw the launch of a book of Rob's poetry Fireworks.

His father Michael Foot, of Walpole St Peter, said: "We would like to say thank-you to everyone who has raised the money and who continue to do so. We are naturally delighted that our own late son's ability to do good continues five years after his death."

Money raised for the charity has been donated to the Shouldham Ward.

So far, £30,000 has been donated to the King's Lynn hospital. The equipment includes 10 new televisions with DVDs, sky boxes, PlayStations and a laptop computer.

A previous donation of £5,000 was spent on a computer server. Another £5,000 was spent updating facilities in the chemotherapy suite and clinic rooms.

A further £29,000 has been donated to The Guy's/St Thomas Hospital in London which will be used to equip the Robert Foot Club Room, which will be included in a new unit for teenagers and young people who suffer from cancer and leukaemia. The trust is still deciding where to spend the remaining £16,000 left in the fund.

Fund-raising for the Robert Foot Leukaemia Fund continues and the band Bog Oake and Friends will be playing at Walpole St Peter Parish Hall on Saturday, March 29 (7.30pm).
