HOMES and businesses in Wisbech were left without power yesterday after a fault in an underground cable.

UK Power Networks confirmed the fault at 1.17pm had affected supplies to 609 of its customers. However, 120 had power returned within four minutes and the majority’s electricity was restored in stages.

Engineers for the firm arrived on site to restore supplies to 159 customers in the Market Place area of the town and all but one had their power restored by 5.33pm.

Alternative means of power were provided before the last property had its power reconnected at 11.45pm. Engineers will return to the site today to make permanent repairs to the network.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: “We aimed to restore power as quickly as was safely possible to those affected. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
