A Wisbech garden has been awarded a ‘Green Flag’ after scooping gold at Anglia in Bloom for the 11th year in a row.

St Peter’s Church gardens was awarded the flag by Keep Britain Tidy, honouring the work by volunteers and Fenland District Council’s open spaces team.

The town is one of 15 communities chosen by the BBC for its new BBC2 Britain In Bloom series. Camera crews have been following volunteers’ efforts over the past few months, ready for the series to be screened in the spring.

Councillor Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said he was delighted the gardens had received the environmental seal of approval once again.

He said: “The award is a tribute to all those who work tirelessly to keep the gardens looking beautiful for its visitors and a place our residents can continue to be proud of and enjoy.”

Bob Ollier, parks and open spaces manager at Fenland District Council, said: “We’d like to thank Wisbech Town Council, the friends of St Peters Church gardens, the council’s cleansing staff and horticultural contractor companies that continue to work together to make our open spaces the best they can be.”

The gardens are among a record-breaking 1,883 parks and green spaces in the country awarded the Green Flag.
