YOUNG drivers from Wisbech Grammar School recorded their best performance of the year in the national finals of the Greenpower electric car racing for schools competition at Goodwood.

The five members of the Twin Cambs team, who were aged between 16 and 12, started the contest in 44th place in a field of 77 and moved up to 27th position in their battery powered, aluminium vehicle, completing 93 miles in four hours.

Their team mates in Twin Cambs Too, who had also won a place in the national final, started in 35th position and then dropped to 69th place during the race after a breakdown, but they managed to claw their way back to 50th place by the finish.

This year, for the first time, the boys were able to tap into the latest telemetry technology, which allowed their teachers to monitor the revolutions per minute of the cars’ motors as well as the engine temperature and speak to the drivers on the phone via a Bluetooth connection.

Mr Philip Bannister, head of design technology at the school, said: “There was a good team spirit, with lots of parents involved in the running of the team, and everything gelled together on the day.”
