A pop up hen adoption day is coming to the area to encourage people to give battery chickens a happy new life.

The British Hen Welfare Trust is holding its next pop-up re-homing day on Saturday June 5 in Godmanchester and is asking anyone who thinks they could give some hens a home to get in touch.

There are 2,600 hard-working hens who would love a second chance in life – all you need to do if you want to adopt some of them is get in touch with Hen Central in advance on 01884 860084.

Gaynor Davies, head of operations at Hen Central, said: “These hens make really beautiful pets – they have such big personalities and are often thought of as feathered cats or dogs.

“There really is minimal effort required to keep hens, and the rewards are so great.

“We’d love to hear from any members of the public willing to save these hens from slaughter, and give them the homes they deserve.”

The national charity is well-known for its pioneering work in re-homing commercial laying hens and through its nationwide team of 450+ volunteers has found homes for more than 500,000 hens since hatching in 2005.

As well as finding homes for hens, the charity also educates the public on how they can make a difference to hen welfare through their shopping basket and eating habits.

Anyone interested call the charity’s re-homing team at Hen Central on 01884 860084, or email hens@bhwt.org.uk.

Hens need to be reserved in advance of the re-homing day itself and the charity asks for a small donation of £4 or £5 per hen to cover its costs.

If you are unable to re-home, but would still like to support the charity please contact Xiomara.pattison@bhwt.co.uk or visit www.bhwt.org.uk to find out more ways to get involved.

The charity also educates consumers about caged eggs hidden in processed foods, like pasta, quiches, cakes and mayonnaise so they can make an informed choice when shopping.
