Forty guests were treated to tea, cakes and a jazz band concert at Wisbech Grammar School's annual Spring Fling.

The event, which has become a centrepiece of the school calendar, was organised by sixth form pupils under the tutelage of head of sixth form Louise Kemp.

Those in attendance included managers, carers and residents from Edina Court, Hickathrift House, Orchard House, Grove Park and the Smedley Homes flats.

The school’s jazz band proved a big hit, playing 1940s swing band music and more contemporary songs. Budding singer Joel Fitz-Simmons delivered his version of a Michael Buble song.

There was a raffle and bingo, overseen by sixth formers Sam Eales and Ed Curl. The enthusiastic pair were giving bingo calling their first try.

Ed said: “It was always someone else who did the bingo calling but they left so we said we would do it.”

Sixth former Charlotte Brenchley, one of 20 pupils who volunteered for the event, said: “We do a lot of community service here. It is good to get everyone together.”

One of the guests , Margorie McMurray, said: “I’m having an excellent time. The band is brilliant.”

Orchards House activities manager Sarah Clifton added: “This event is great fun. It’s nice to be invited.”

Sarah Harper, Hickathrift House coordinator, said: “This is our first time coming here and we hope to bring more people next time. It’s brilliant. They have gone all out.”

Reflecting on the event, Mrs Kemp said: “As part of their community service pupils go to different places to play instruments, read the newspaper and talk to the residents.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, which is good.”
