Nine days before the film industry meets to recognise the year’s finest actors, actresses and films, West Walton Community School held their own version of the Oscars.

Pupils dressed to impress at a special black-tie ceremony put on to mark the end of the end of the school’s 7th Annual Literacy Festival. This year’s theme was poetry.

Children have been writing poems for the past three weeks, which were judged by teachers. Categories included best overall poem, best vocabulary and best narration.

Michael Hill, Mayor of Wisbech, and his wife Jane handed out the awards.

Head teacher Jill Davis said: “The focus of this year’s literacy festival was poetry. We had two local poets come in to inspire the children.

“The children have written a number of poems over the past three weeks, which the teachers had the very difficult task of judging. The standard was so high - it was the best work they’ve ever produced.

“Everybody dressed up in their best clubs and pretended they were in the best exotic ballroom. They all looked so grown-up.”
