DETECTIVES have been piecing together the final hours of Alex Chilvers who was killed in the early hours of Sunday in the centre of March.

Floral tributes line the spot where pedestrian Mr Chilvers was knocked down. He died later in Peterborough District Hospital.

The investigation has been wide ranging as detectives probe where Mr Chilvers had spent the evening, and how he came to be in Broad Street. Witnesses say that earlier he had been drinking with friends but may have stormed off after an argument.

Family and friends paid their respects with poignant messages for 20-year-old 'Chile' outside the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society at the place where he lay dying.

"Blessed to have known u - there will never be a day that goes by I will not think of our happy moments we shared," said one message.

"You were a great lad and will be missed," read another.

Mr Chilvers had been on a night out during some time off from his new job in Cambridge.

An inquest has been opened into his death and the funeral will be held at St Peter's Church on July 3 at 1.30pm. It will be followed by a private cremation at Peterborough.

Nineteen-year-old David Goakes of Grange Road, March, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the incident.

He is alleged to have been driving the Land Rover 90 that knocked down Mr Chilvers; police sealed off the town centre during the night whilst scenes of crime officers attended.

PC John Blood from the Road Policing Unit is appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward and contact him.

He said: "I am appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact police."
