A PLAQUE was unveiled yesterday to honour L/Cpl Alex Hawkins - a Wisbech Grammar School 'old boy' killed in Afghanistan.
The dedication took place at Wisbech Grammar School when L/Cpl Hawkins studied. His mother attended to see the tribute to her son, which is funded by our sister paper, the Eastern Daily Press, who back the Royal Anglian Afghanistan Memorial Fund.
It is the first in a series of nine plaques which will be unveiled to remember the fallen from the regiment's 1st Battalion in Helmand province. The 22 year-old from East Dereham, Norfolk, was killed in an explosion during a patrol on July 25 last year.
His vehicle was returning to its base when it came under attack.
L/Cpl Hawkins was a sniper with D Company though at the time of his death was attached to C Company. L/Cpl Hawkins was born in Kings Lynn and had been in the battalion since 2003, also serving in Iraq in 2005.
