RUNNERS from across Fenland ran to Save the Planet - and raised money for the March Summer Festival - at the town's first fun run and race.

More than 30 people joined in the fun run with 80 people taking to the start line for the race.

Both of Sunday's 5km runs, sponsored by Wimblington recycling company Plasgran, were started in West End Park by the Mayor of March, Councillor Jan French.

The men's race was won by John Manlow and the women's race was won by Rebecca Cousins. Trophies for the top three men and women were handed out by Carl Waters, managing director of Plasgran, and his wife Kresha.

Everyone who took part was also presented with a drinks bottle, embossed with the Save the Planet and Plasgran logos.

Valerie Anderson, March Royal Naval Association representative on the summer festival committee, said: "We were very pleased with our first event of this kind but, more importantly, Plasgran was thrilled to bits and we are hoping to do it again next year.

"We have raised about £1,000, which will go towards paying for two or three of the bands to perform on the Saturday of the festival."

A sea cadet band from Kettering has been confirmed for this year's festival, which carries the theme 'Save the Planet' and takes place from June 13-15. They will also bring a scale replica field gun - made from recycled materials - for the parade.
