ICY pavements and sub-zero temperatures failed to put off the hundreds of stalls, entertainers and bargain hunters for the annual Wisbech Christmas market.

Yesterday's feast saw 200 stalls across the town centre offering festive treats, gift ideas, hand-made goods and crafts.

The Crescent played host to 32 stalls and Norfolk Street had an extra 10 stalls this year.

And Wisbech Castle opened its doors on Market day for the first time, playing host to 12 craft stalls.

Prize for best stall at the fair went to Annette Avery from Peterborough, who sold hand-made jewellery.

Mike Chapman, markets and events manager for Fenland District Council, said: "We fell victim to the weather a bit. There were about 20 spaces not taken up and some coaches couldn't make it.

"But the range of stalls was fantastic, the entertainers were brilliant even in the cold temperatures and I'm sure people enjoyed the day."

The market was started by the council in 2003 and has grown ever since, with various groups joining the project team over the years. This year Wisbech Lions joined - and next year Wisbech Rotary Club will join the team.
