SCORES of firefighters have rushed to the scene of a massive blaze at a scrap yard in Wisbech today.

The fire was reported at 12.40pm and seven fire crews and a water carrier from Yaxley were immediately called to the scene at B H Porter and Sons in Oldfield Lane.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said that around 80 cars were reported to be on fire in the blaze and that fire crews were currently assessing the situation and fighting the massive blaze.

A total of 45 firefighters are currently tackling the blaze.

A spokeswoman for the service said that there is currently a large plume of smoke filling the sky and that any residents living near to the fire should keep their doors and windows closed.

The thick black plume of smoke can be seen as far away as March.

It is understood that the nearby Travis Perkins warehouse has been shut, because of the closeness of the fire.

Eye witness Bill Miller, who is a lorry driver for Travis Perkins said he spotted the fire during his lunchbreak.

He said: "I heard a cracking and popping and I looked right and saw loads and loads of flames coming from the cars."

Rick Hylton, district manager for Fenland for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said that noone had been injured during the incident.

Further information is expected to be released later by the fire service.

Crews form Wisbech, March, Huntingdon, and Thorney have been called to the scene.
