THEY were football crazy, and football mad... and with a charity campaign the winner no-one went home sad.

Crowds lined the terraces of the GER in March for the five-a-side tournament on Sunday, organised by Fenmarc Produce as part of its fundraising campaign for Sue Ryder Care.

The March-based company fielded four teams - one from each of its sites - but faced tough opposition from Greenvale AP of Floods Ferry, the ASDA store in Wisbech, the Tesco store in March and Solanum of Sutton Bridge.

But it was Fenmarc's March team that staved off the competition and took the title.

A total of 884.72 was raised through admission fees, team enrolment fees, refreshments, a prize draw and a 150 donation from a supplier through Fenmarc's Swinderby office.

That money will be added to the grand total for Sue Ryder's Big Wigs Challenge.

Prizes for the draw were donated by a number of businesses, including the Anchor at Wimblington; the Griffin Hotel in March; Peterborough Phantoms; Rush Potatoes; Thomas Cook; the Kina Bodycare centre at Alpine health club in March; The Oundle Mill; Fairstead Developments and ARCO.

Vital Workwear sponsored Fenmarc's March teams, paying for both kits.

Kristi Glowacki, Fenmarc training administrator and one of the campaign organisers, said: "The football tournament was a fantastic event and we have now raised about 2,000 in total."

The fundraising continues until the end of this month, with a fish and chip day and an office Wii bowling competition among the planned events.
