A BUMPER number of entries in the vegetable section of Doddington Horticultural Society's 63rd annual show helped make it a huge success.

Entries this year were up by 110 to 792 across the board but it was the vegetable section which proved really popular with all age groups.

There was a big rise in entries for the children's section with Cavalry Primary School in March submitting 80 entries.

Show secretary Lyne Green said: "The show is open to all the local schools and we would have great pleasure in seeing more young people involved in next year's show on Saturday July 24 2010.

"We had a bumper number of entries in the vegetable section of 130, which was the highest for many years, however the fruit and flower sections were down partly due to the show being two weeks earlier than last year and partly due to the recent weather conditions."

Dr Simon Hambling of Doddington Medical Centre presented the prizes.

The Judges were:

• Fruit and Vegetable Section - Mr & Mrs G Frost of March

• Cookery and Preserves - Mrs Jolley and Mrs Cutteridge of Doddington

• Handicrafts - Mrs L Storey of March
