And we are triply delighted to reveal our partners in these inaugural awards are Wisbech Town Council, The Luminus Group and, providing the feast of prizes, the award-winning restaurant chain Frankie & Benny’s.

The awards night has been set for Thursday, December 11, at the Queen Mary Centre, Wisbech, and will feature a celebration of all that is best in Wisbech sport.

We will be honouring individuals and teams who have played a role in making Wisbech a sporting haven – seeking out nominations from individuals, clubs, schools and sporting associations across the town and within a six to seven-mile radius.

We will be looking for nominees in coaching, management, club or sport service, as well as looking for outstanding achievement in age groups and recognising those with disabilities who have conquered goals and won a community over with their endeavour and determination.

The full list of categories is shown below – it is now up to you, our readers, to make this event sparkle.

There are 10 categories and thanks to the generosity of our main sponsor, Frankie & Benny’s, we will be awarding £50 restaurant vouchers in each of the seven individual categories.

There will be a special prize, too, for the school of the year and for the junior team winner the prize will be a ‘pizza party’ hosted by Frankie and Benny’s.

It is to the new restaurant adjacent the Light Cinema that the winning senior team will be heading too – again for a special party laid on for them by our sponsors.

From Wisbech Town Council and the Wisbech Standard will come certificates and trophies – and all those invited to the awards night, will receive commendations.

The finals night will be hosted by a sporting celebrity (to be announced later) and the evening will feature music, entertainment, a light buffet and a bar.

Tickets for the occasion will go on sale later but at just £5 for adults, and £2.50 for under-16s, are certain to be snapped up quickly.

So all YOU have to do now is to glance through the categories, decide which individual/team you want to put forward, and send us your nomination.

Entries can be made up to 5pm on October 20, after which a judging panel will draw up a shortlist for the spectacular final.

The sponsors have decided that the award for ‘unsung hero’ will become the Roger Green Unsung Hero Award, commemorating the memory of a former mayor and councillor who did much over many years for Wisbech and who relished and supported sport both locally and regionally.
