A FORMER Chairman of Fenland District Council says its time to consider whether or not the council is superfluous.

Roger Heading, an original member of the council when it was created in 1973 under the local government reform, said in response to the email-gate scandal he was "much saddened by the present posturing by a parade of mostly mediocrities".

Mr Heading said: "Some of us thought in the 1970s that there was at least one-too-many tiers of government in this country. Now is the time to seriously consider whether or not Fenland District Council is superfluous."

He added: "Whoever is chosen as the new leader, I hope it will not be a past walking disaster area."
