FORMER businessman Paul Ashby has failed to pay off fines imposed for a health and safety offence.
Fifty-eight-year-old Ashby told Fenland magistrates he could not pay, because his plastics recycling company went into liquidation, owing 460,000.
He had failed to pay a 3,000 fine, 1,000 costs and a 15 surcharge.
"All my money went into the business," he said. "I borrowed 70,000 in an attempt to keep my business afloat," he told the court. "I have been in the industry for 30 years, and have never had to sign on."
Ashby, of Station Road, March, told magistrates he had recently been working on a self employed basis, buying and selling plastics.
He was ordered to pay 50 off his debt, and the court will review his situation on April 20.
