FORMER businessman Paul Ashby has failed to pay off fines imposed for a health and safety offence.
Fifty-eight-year-old Ashby told Fenland magistrates he could not pay, because his plastics recycling company went into liquidation, owing 460,000.
He had failed to pay a 3,000 fine, 1,000 costs and a 15 surcharge.
"All my money went into the business," he said. "I borrowed 70,000 in an attempt to keep my business afloat," he told the court. "I have been in the industry for 30 years, and have never had to sign on."
