A man charged with planning a terrorist attack on American military personnel in the UK will appear in court today (Monday 15) for the first day of his trial.

Junead Ahmed Khan, 25, is alleged to have planned to stage a car accident and run over a serviceman.

The charges are believed to be linked to an alleged plot to attack July 4 celebrations at RAF Feltwell last year.

The popular event, organised by RAF Lakenheath’s 48th Fighter Wing, was cancelled due to security concerns.

It is alleged that between August 1 2014 and May 10 2015 with the “intention of committing acts of terrorism, they engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention”.

Junead Ahmed Khan faces an additional count contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 dating between May 10, 2015 and July 14, 2015.

He will appear at Kingston Crown Court and denies making preparations for attacking military personnel in the UK between May 10, 2015 and July 14, 2015.

Mr Khan is also jointly charged, alongside his uncle, Shazib Ahmed Khan, 23, with making preparations for travelling to Syria to fight for Islamic State (IS) - also known as Isil.

The pair from Luton will appear in court together and both deny engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts on August 1, 2014 and July 15, 2015.

The nephew and uncle were remanded in custody in August 2015.

They are due to face a six-week trial.
