Thousands of people flocked to Wisbech as the town’s Rose Fair returned for another year of floral festivities.

This year’s theme was ‘the world of fantasy’ which brought together traditional flowers and exotic plants in a series of colourful displays over the weekend of Saturday July 2.

Showers of rain failed to dampen spirits on Saturday as characters from Star Wars, Toy Story and Frozen strolled alongside the annual parade as it passed through the town, keeping hundreds of onlookers – including Mayor of Wisbech, Garry Tibbs and MP for NE Cambs, Steve Barclay – entertained with a backdrop of music from around the globe.

Fenland Gymnastic Academy members were left jumping for joy after their float, adorned with colourful balloons and banners, was crowned as the best float of the year.

A fly-past from a Spitfire, a variety of stalls, art exhibitions and a classic car display all featured, and fair-goers were treated to the fair’s flagship vibrant floral displays at St. Peter’s and St Paul’s Church on Sunday.

Visitors also explored historic Peckover House and gardens before the Clarkson Singers brought the successful weekend to a close with a concert.

Rose Fair has been celebrated in Wisbech for over 50 years, since local rose growers began selling flower buds in the church gardens to raise funds for the restoration of the church in 1963.
