FIREFIGHTERS this morning battled a blaze at an empty two-storey house in a Fenland village.

Two crews from Wisbech and one from Dogsthorpe were called to a fire at Old Post Office on Church Lane in Tydd St Giles at 4.05am.

When crews arrived they discovered that the empty house, measuring about 10m by 30m, was well alight with flames going through the roof.

Firefighters have been battling the fire using a turntable ladder to gain access to the roof, along with one hose reel and two jets.

They were forced to tackle the fire from the outside of the building due to extensive damage to the first floor and roof.

The majority of the blaze has now been extinguished and crews are dealing with the remaining hot spots.

A fire investigation will take place later today.
