MINISTER TO CHIP FACTORY AS IT CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL WIND TURBINE INSTALLATION

WHITTLESEY: McCain Foods is to host a reception for Malcolm Wicks, Minister for Energy, at its Whittlesey site to celebrate the successful installation of three, 125-metre-high wind turbines used to power the UK's largest chip factory.

The Minister will be present on Tuesday to celebrate the sixth month anniversary and will also view the new anaerobic lagoon, learning how McCain became the first major UK food manufacturer to power a facility of this size using alternative energy.

The two initiatives provide up to 70% of the annual energy requirements required to operate the plant, demonstrating that companies can be environmentally responsible while saving money at the same time.

The total power installed is 10MWe (9MWe from the three turbines and 1MWe from the lagoon-powered gas engine) with annual generation providing the equivalent to the annual electrical needs of 7,000 domestic houses.

CRACKDOWN ON METAL THEFT LANDS MORE THAN 70 ARRESTS THIS YEAR

CAMBRIDGESHIRE: Police have arrested more than 70 people so far this year as part of an ongoing crackdown on metal theft.

Operation Saruman was launched in September last year with the aim of bringing thieves to justice and disrupting their offending.

And the campaign is gathering pace as police join forces with partner agencies and scrap metal dealers to target thieves.

Since the beginning of April, police have also stopped and searched more than 250 vehicles; issued - with partner agencies - £6,000 worth of fines, which are given to people who are involved in the transportation or disposal of metals; and seized six vehicles for having no insurance.

Detective Inspector Andy Gipp, who leads Saruman, said: "We are listening to the needs of scrap metal dealers and have been the first county to introduce a 24-hour reporting system - notifying the dealers of all material stolen within the county in the previous 24 hours in order to disrupt and arrest offenders.

"If people see anything suspicious, for example people driving around slowly looking at properties, knocking at doors asking for any metal or any other suspicious activity, they should call police. Gathering this type of information is exceptionally important as it enables us to identify people who we may need to target."

Anyone with information about metal theft should contact police on 0845 456 4564, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

FUEL-SAVING INITIATIVE LAUNCHES TODAY WITH NEW WEBSITE

CAMBRIDGESHIRE: Residents can now beat rising fuel costs by sharing car journeys across the county with the launch of a new website on National Liftshare day.

A new car sharing website, www.camshare.co.uk, is launched today.

Cambridgeshire County Council and the Travel for Work Partnership have commissioned Liftshare to run the online scheme for members of the public and employers.

The website is designed to reduce travel costs as well as cut congestion and pollution.

Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the county council, said: "I am delighted that CamShare is offering Cambridgeshire residents more choice about how they travel around the County. Tackling climate change is a priority for the Council and it is increasingly important to encourage travel by more sustainable means including car sharing, thus reducing the amount of CO2 emitted.

"I am very enthusiastic about car sharing, and the travel and environmental benefits that it has to offer."

Members of the public can sign up for free on www.camshare.co.uk. The process is simple and residents will search for others who are travelling the same route. They are then able to make contact through a secure on-line message centre.

County residents and employers wanting more information on should log on to on to www.camshare.co.uk. Employers can also contact Travel for Work on 01223 712429.
