SPORTS teams and pre-schools were the big losers in this year's round of grant allocations to voluntary and community groups by Fenland District Council.

A total of £241,790 was allocated to 29 groups across Fenland, with 46 groups missing out on some extra cash.

A number of sports clubs missed out on a grant, including Wisbech and District Squash Club, March Cricket Club, March Town United Football Club, Chatteris St Peter's Tennis Club, Whittlesey United Football Club, Whittlesey Junior Football Club and Parson Drove Cricket Club.

And pre-school groups which had applications turned down included Doddington Under 5's Parent and Toddler Group, ABC Pre-School and Kids Club in Tydd St Giles and Elm Pre-School.

The grant allocations were approved by the council's Cabinet last month, after it was told that 75 groups applied for a grant.

Hetty Thornton, the council's community development officer, said the total financial request was £906,254, compared to a total available pot of £250,000.
