POLICE are urging farms, commercial premises and householders who have heating oil or diesel on their premises to remain vigilant.

It follows two recent thefts of large amounts that have occurred in isolated locations in the area.

One of the thefts was overnight in the Terrington St Clement area between Tuesday November 18 and Wednesday November 19 when around a 1000 litres of diesel was siphoned off from tractors.

Supt for west Norfolk Nick Davison said: "Despite recent reductions the price of heating oil and diesel remains high and as a consequence is an attractive commodity for thieves.

"Thieves will want to put their vehicle as near to the tank as possible so trying to prevent that is one way to reduce the risks.

"By ensuring that the tank is placed in such a position that access to it can be restricted when the premises are unoccupied will reduce the opportunity. It should also be situated within sight of nearby occupied buildings and not hidden from view behind outbuildings. Lighting may also deter potential thieves.

"I'd urged anyone who witnesses suspicious activity by people or vehicles around remote locations where oil or diesel is in large quantities to get in touch with police."

A good quality locking device should also be fitted to all fuel tanks such as a high-quality shackled padlock. Owners could also consider perimeter security for the whole tank such as a metal cage or fencing.
