A FENLAND primary school has been described as “a sanctuary” for children in a glowing report by government inspectors.

Elm Road Primary School in Wisbech was given an overall ‘good’ rating by Ofsted inspectors who praised the school for ensuring pupils’ safety.

The report said: “Excellent procedures for child protection ensure that the school provides a sanctuary for many children.

“All staff are suitably trained in child protection and there are excellent systems for recording any concerns.

“Elm Road continues to provide a caring, supporting learning environment that promotes good relationships and a friendly, vibrant school community.

“Pupils and their parents and carers are justifiably proud of their school.”

Questionnaires completed at the end of the on-site inspection by pupils’ parents and carers stated that all strongly agreed, or agreed, with the idea that the school kept their child safe.

Head teacher Graham Lockwood’s “supportive and enthusiastic” style was also praised after inspectors stated his manner was reflected in many aspects of the school’s success.

Improvements were deemed to have been made in the school’s self-assessment procedure and the attendance levels of its 226 pupils, which rose “considerably to nearly average levels”.

A well-run breakfast club was also praised for providing an “enjoyable and healthy” start to the school day which helped Elm Road Primary achieve the ‘good’ rating - the second-best inspection grade possible.

Only a small number of assessment criteria scored a ‘satisfactory’ rating - the third-ranking mark in the four-grade scoring system - including the quality of learning for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
