Fenland primary school celebrates after achieving academy status

SPECIAL celebrations were held at a Fenland primary school on Friday after it achieved academy status.

Leverington Primary was given an ‘outstanding’ rating during an Ofsted Inspection last February and 96 per cent of its pupils gained Level 4 grades in English and maths during last year’s SATs exams.

In September, under Michael Gove’s - Education Secretary - Academies Act it was decided by Parliament that top-rated schools could apply to become an academy. The status removes local authority control and gives schools extra freedom over their curriculum, admissions and how much they pay teachers.

Rosie Simmonds, the school’s head teacher, said: “We are delighted to achieve academy status for Leverington Primary.

“It will enable our governing body to direct improved resources for the educational and welfare benefit of our children. We will have freedom to decide on our curriculum and which initiatives will further school development.

“Being a member of the Wisbech Schools Partnership, working, collaborating and sharing expertise and ideas for school improvements is an integral part of our outstanding status at Leverington Primary Academy.”
