MEET VILLAGE CARNIVAL'S PRINCE AND PRINCESS

DODDINGTON: Royal couple Bethany Turner and Callum Henderson will be leading the procession of floats at this year's Doddington Carnival.

The carnival is being held on July 5 and promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year's theme for the procession of floats is 'Adverts' which gives entrants a wide scope of choosing ideas from television, newspapers, national or local adverts.

Doddington's scarecrow competition will also follow this theme.

Organisers said that the procession will include 19 traditional lorry floats and some tractors, as well as two marching bands.

Twenty four girls and five boys put their names forward to fill the position of carnival princess and prince and the names were picked out of a box. The couple also have the honour later in the year of playing an official part in the Christmas light switch-on in the village.

ONE PERSON BELIEVED INJURED IN TWO-VEHICLE COLLISION

FENLAND: Traffic on one of Fenland busiest roads was held up during this morning's rush hour, after a two vehicle collision.

Initial reports suggest one person has been injured in the collision, on the A141 between March and Chatteris.

Police reported that one side of the road was blocked and that fire and ambulance crews were on the scene.

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST BOOKED TO ATTEND FOOTBALL FINALS

FENLAND: An Olympic gold medallist will visit a Fenland school next month, when it plays host to the final round of fixtures in a football league.

Duncan Goodhew will be special guest at Elm Primary School on June 20, where the final games of Premier Sports' schools football league will be held.

Mark Norris, area manager for Premier Sports, said: "He is all booked and definitely coming.

"As he is with many other groups, Duncan is an ambassador of Premier Sports so I met up with him, had a chat and he said he would come along.

"We have about eight schools from the March and Wisbech area, which have teams in under-8s and over-8s leagues, coming for the last round of fixtures in their league.

"The fixtures will start at 1pm, and Duncan will present trophies when the fixtures are completed."

Premier Sports holds extra-curricular sports activities - including football, rugby, basketball, gymnastics, athletics and cricket - at more than 20 schools across Fenland and East Cambridgeshire.

Mr Goodhew won gold at the Moscow Olympics in 1980 in the 100-metre breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 4x100-metre medley. He also won bronze medals in the 4x100-metre medley at the World Championships in 1978 and at the European Championships in 1977.

DRUNK RUGBY PLAYER WANTED CCTV TO KEEP AN EYE ON CAR - BUT CCTV CAUGHT HIM MOVING IT

PARSON DROVE: Drunken rugby player Charles Roberts was keen for CCTV operators to keep an eye on his car overnight - but they spotted him moving the vehicle in a car park in the early hours, and alerted the police.

Nineteen year-old Roberts - who had been to an end of season club dinner - then gave a breath test reading almost double the legal limit.

The teenager had been sick, and had to climb out of his car's back window when police turned up at the Chapel Road car park in Wisbech.

Appearing at Wisbech courthouse on Tuesday, Roberts, of The Old Rectory, Main Road, Parson Drove, admitted drink driving on April 26.

The teenager, who plans to go to university in September, was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £100 with £60 costs and a £15 surcharge.

Prosecuting, Giles Beaumont said police arrived at the car park at 2am, and drove in front of Roberts' Volkswagen Polo. He gave "a blank look" when told to switch off the car engine, and then climbed out of the back window.

Roberts had thought his original parking spot was not covered by CCTV, so decided to move it after the dinner, said solicitor Andrew Spence.

"He was attempting to move the vehicle a short distance to a safe place," he explained. "He accepts it was a stupid decision and he should have left the car where it was."

MAN WHO SCARED POLICE IS REMANDED IN CUSTODY

WISBECH: A man who scared a priest and a number of women by his "nuisance and annoying" behaviour in Wisbech has been remanded in custody.

Homeless Andrzej Dudek kicked and rattled doors and banged his fists on a window before drinking milk from a doorstep on April 25.

"He scared a priest by his mere presence, standing in a doorway and knocking on the door repeatedly," prosecutor Giles Beaumont told Fenland magistrates.

Dudek admitted using threatening behaviour, and further admitted that he stole five pints of milk and a newspaper from Helen Zwalf at the Vicarage of St Peter and St Paul's Church in Wisbech, and stole a plastic Koi carp belonging to John Munns on May 10.

Fenland magistrates adjourned sentencing until June 3.

THROCKENHOLT: An inquest into the death of a motor neurone sufferer, who died after dropping a burning cigarette on his pyjamas, has been opened.

The coroner for South Holland and Boston has opened and adjourned his inquest.

HEROIN USER CAUGHT WITH FIVE BAGS OF CANNABIS

WISBECH: Five bags of cannabis were found on former heroin user Lucy Denton after police spotted her behaving suspiciously in the street.

Denton, 32, had just paid £60 for the class C drug, she told officers, and it was for her personal use.

Appearing at Wisbech courthouse on Wednesday, Denton, of York Road, Wisbech, admitted possessing four small bags of cannabis resin, and one small bag of cannabis on May 1.

"She has not relapsed into heroin use, but sometimes uses cannabis to help her relax," explained solicitor Ben Pearson. "She has regular contact with a drugs counsellor."

Denton was given a 12-month conditional discharge, the drugs will be destroyed, and she must pay £60 costs.
