GIRLGUIDING Fenland marked its recent successes when more than 100 members got together for a celebration with visiting dignitaries.

Chairman of Fenland District Council, Councillor Bernard Keane and the mayors of March, Chatteris and Wisbech, Councillors Trevor Quince, Sue Elam and Jonathan Farmer were there to join in.

The evening began with a photographic record of achievements and showed girls taking part in a diverse range of activities from international events, volunteering overseas, archery and canoeing to litter picking in Wenny Recreation Ground in Chatteris.

All the events are organised by the 143 volunteer leaders who give around 13,728 hours of professional youth work to the community each year.

The guests then heard from Delia Swann who completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition on the Isle of Man and Jennifer Moore who attended the Iceland Jamboree as part of a county selected group.

A cheque for £2,351.05 was presented to Macmillan Cancer Care as part of the Division's Community action Programme. The money was raised by the girls taking part in a number of sponsored walks.

Presentations were made to a number of individuals. The Guide section highest award 'The Baden Powell Award' was gained by Amie Kisby and Jessica Bagg, 1st Wisbech St Mary Guides; Amelia Groves and Samantha Welcher, 1st Doddington Guides; Ashleigh Mays, 3rd Wisbech Guides.

To gain the award the girls had to complete a number of tasks and challenges including leading healthy lifestyles, increasing their global awareness and celebrate diversity.

A senior section overnight camp permit was awarded to Emily Syred of 3rd Wisbech Rangers. She had to plan an event, establish and operate a budget, plan for the safety and security of others, organise catering and make first aid arrangements.
