THE challenge of uncovering the best in Fenland business is again under way, following the launch of the 2010 Fenland Enterprise Business Awards.

Sponsors, civic leaders and some of the winners from the inaugural 2009 awards gathered for the launch last Wednesday at Tydd St Giles Golf and Leisure Club.

They enjoyed a buffet and complimentary drinks, as well as an introduction to this year's awards from Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard editor John Elworthy.

He said it was still tempting to bask in the glory of last year's inaugural awards, run by this newspaper, but that the world and indeed Fenland have moved on since.

"It's another year and another challenge to seek out and support the very best that Fenland has to offer," he said.

"This is truly an extraordinary part of the country. What we may lack in financial riches we certainly more than make up in riches of an altogether different kind - that of working in part of Cambridgeshire that holds so much unlocked potential.

"FEBA glimpsed some of it last year but we are not only convinced but know there is a vast array of talent, enterprise, doggedness, value, determination and spirit out there that we feel deserves recognition.

"I invite you to help us root out those success stories - some in their infancy, some which have flourished into mature businesses."

There are numerous examples of such businesses across Fenland, but Mr Elworthy said several things are needed to ensure individuals, families and companies get the recognition they deserve.

He said: "It may well be they will argue they are too busy to enter awards so let's help them - if you know of them and know what they've achieved, then give them a let up and help them to enter.

"Encourage them to take part - we want to establish FEBA as the premier vehicle for displaying enterprise and business throughout this part of Cambridgeshire so that others can see and know just what it is that makes Fenland so special.

"Enterprise in Fenland is a rich minefield. We hope you will be able to offer us your support, your recommendations and your enthusiasm to tap into it.
