THE Diocese of Ely is launching its 900th anniversary this weekend with a two-day visit from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.
Churches across the diocese will be celebrating with a programme of events across Cambridgeshire and West Norfolk planned for 2009.
During his visit, Dr Williams will see projects reflecting the diversity within the Diocese before taking part in the official launch at Ely Cathedral on Saturday.
His fact-finding tour will begin on Friday at 3 pm in Cambourne, where he will consecrate the site for the construction of the eagerly-awaited church building. Work starts next month as the project has just received a £50,000 boost.
On Saturday morning, Dr Williams will tour one of the regions biggest farms, G S Shropshire and Sons at Barway near Ely. The 10,000-hectare arable farm encompasses the entire food production process from planting and cultivating to packaging and marketing.
Dr Williams will hear how migrant workers play a vital role in providing the wide range of skills needed for the farming enterprise.
Later in the morning, the Archbishop will visit the church of St Mary Magdalen in Wiggenhall, near King's Lynn.
He will then return to Ely to launch the year-long celebrations at a Eucharist service in the Cathedral at 2.30pm, together with the Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell.
All 350 parishes across the Diocese have been invited to take part and representatives will collect bags containing leather bookmarks with the Ely 900 prayer, badges, stickers, flyers and candles.
