MOTORSPORT is often seen to be a part of a man's world, but Whittlesey school dinner lady Kate Granger is racing ahead of the boys.

The 41-year-old from Whittlesey started her second season with Team Karda Racing in the East Midlands Racing Association on Sunday and secured an impressive second place in the intermediate novice solos section.

And she can keep her eyes focussed on her performance thanks to a new sponsorship from Specsavers in Wisbech.

She said: "I went to watch a race a few years ago and just thought the riders must get an amazing buzz from tearing around at such a speed.

"I got my licence, joined the East Midlands Racing Association and have never looked back. I've never raced against any women, they don't seem to be interested in it, but I love it.

"I know some of the guys at Specsavers in Wisbech and they are avid motorsport fans.

"They saw the link between motorbike racing and the need for good eyesight and I'm grateful for their support. They are helping to continue doing something that I love."

Mike Avery, store director at Specsavers Wisbech, said: "We're very keen to get involved with this sponsorship as we feel it's important to show our support for local people.

"In Kate's line of work, it's vital to have regular eye examinations and we want to encourage other young people to visit the store and get their own sight checked."

Mrs Granger, who works as a dinner lady at Alderman Jacobs Primary School in Whittlesey, was singled out for being one of the most promising novices last season.

All races are held at Mallory Park circuit and the new season runs until September.
