THE launch of a county-wide, search and rescue mountain bike unit has taken a further step forward with the purchase of three bikes from a Wisbech store.

Cambridgeshire Search and Rescue, CamSAR for short, bought the mountain bikes from the Halfords store in Wisbech, ready for the unit's launch.

Paul Arnill, CamSAR search controller and founder, said: "This has brought us one step closer to getting the unit off the ground.

"Mountain bikes have become increasingly used in search as they allow a team of qualified searchers to cover footpaths, parkland and urban areas extremely fast."

CamSAR, a registered charity, was formed to help the police in the search for vulnerable, missing people.

About £3,000 more is needed to launch the mountain bike unit.
