A MASSIVE shake up of bus services affecting thousands of bus travellers throughout the Fens and the rest of Cambridgeshire has been unveiled today.

Stagecoach has put forward seven pages of changes and amendments that are now before the Eastern Traffic Commissions for consideration.

If they go ahead, it will mean many services being altered and connections between March, Wisbech, Chatteris and Whittlesey into Peterborough and Cambridge being changed.

A county council spokesman said they were aware of the proposals and follows Stagecoach's purchase of Huntingdon and District Bus Company earlier this year.

The spokesman said that following the bus company's review they had put to the Traffic Commissioners details of the services they want to they want to change, services they want to cancel and registration of new services or applications to vary existing services

"The vast majority of cancellations are covered by replacement services," said the council spokesman. The county council's passenger transport services are carefully looking at Stagecoach's proposals.

The spokesman said they understood the vast majority of services will be retained, some people will get a better service and others will get a change.

"If there are changes they are changes to the time and we currently going through to make sure there are no gaps," he added.

None of the services being discussed receive subsidy from the county council.

However in March residents have already expressed anxiety about a threat of the 356/7 town service.

Cllr Matt Bradney, Cabinet Member for Growth and Infrastructure, said:

"Stagecoach have informed the Cambridgeshire County Council about a review of their current commercial services. As part of this process, they are renumbering and reregistering a number of services throughout the county.

"Officers in the Passenger Transport team are currently assessing these proposals to ensure no community will lose out following the review, especially in the rural areas of the county. From their preliminary work it appears the vast majority of services will be retained and in some cases a better service will be offered with new timetables. If during our detailed investigation of the review we find there are major gaps in the service, we will investigate ways of addressing this."
