“It’s scary to think that 100 years have gone by and we still need peace in the world.”
Those were the words of a Year 5 pupil after a World War Two veteran was the special guest at Elm C of E Primary School’s centenary celebration assembly.
John Mackintosh attended the assembly in which school children sang wartime songs and read their own poetry based on the theme of remembrance.
The Year 5 pupil said: “It has been really interesting learning about the people who fought for our country in the past and the people that still do today.
“So on Monday we will think about the people who have died for us and their poor families who have lost someone they love.”
The assembly was held after children created a giant poppy as part of their Armistice celebrations.
Jade Betts, headteacher, said: “With no living survivors of World War One and numbers of World War Two veterans sadly decreasing, it is vitally important that our children understand the significance of this November’s centenary commemoration of the end of the First World War.
“We wanted to do something creative and reflective that involved all of the children.”
