FIREFIGHTERS have left the scene of a garage fire in a Fenland village, 24 hours after it broke out.

Crews have, for the last 24 hours, been cooling an acetylene cylinder inside a garage in Begdale Road, Elm, amid risks it could explode after the blaze was extinguished.

At 1pm today, crews used a thermal imaging camera to assess the temperature of the cylinder.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "The acetylene is now colder than the air surrounding it and firefighters are satisfied that there is no risk of it exploding."

The 200-metre cordon has been lifted and residents are safe to return to their homes.

The Environment Agency's cleansing team are now making arrangements for the cylinder to be removed and disposed of safely.
