Seventy-seven runners including one dressed as a fried egg and another as an Easter bunny on roller skates took part in Wisbech's annual Easter 5K run at the weekend.

The event, which was organised by Active Fenland, also saw 150 children take part in an Easter egg hunt.

“It went very well,” said Lauren Bremner, Active Fenland co-ordinator at Fenland District Council and one of the organisers.

“We aim to encourage more people to get involved in the free beginners’ running groups we offer and hopefully catch the bug for running to increase participation in the area.

“We had some great fancy dress including Sarah-Jane MacDonald as a fried egg and our fancy dress winner Bernard Chapman (Walking Football) as an Easter Bunny on roller skates.

“We also aim to provide a fun event that brings the people of Wisbech together.”

There was also a walking football demonstration, face-painting, toy stall, community sessions from the Wisbech group People and Animals and the Wisbech committee of Save the Children Fund also held a charity stall.

“All runners received a medal at the finish line and a hot cross bun and water donated by Wisbech Tesco who were represented by community champion Toni Bird,” added Miss Bremner.

“Money raised from the run helped pay for the event and any left over will go towards buying equipment for the Three Counties Running Club to help them get more beginners into running.

“We also had a free 1K run for families.”

The next fun run will be a Halloween run in the evening on Tuesday October 31.

The top runners were:

“Morgan Harrison, who came first, is 14 and started running at the start of this year by coming to a beginners’ session and is already sub 20 for 5k.

“He along with his brother Reece, auntie and mum have now all joined the club. He’s taken part in training sessions, park runs and fun runs.

“Second place went to Luke Gardner, who is 11 years old.

“Skaiste Gaidamaviciute, who was awarded fourth place, was our first female and joined the beginners’ group three months ago. She’s also ran park runs and is now working towards a half-marathon at Sleaford. She has taken to running really well and has found it a great way to increase her social circle and get to meet new people.

“Along with Adel O’Connor, Skaiste raised quite a few of the Easter eggs for the kids egg hunt along with the generous donations from all the clubs members.”
