A community group have called for action to tackle a drink and drug den in the grounds of Wisbech Rugby Club.
The field is owned by different groups but a local politician says it is time for joined up thinking to hit the problem.
Town Facebook group, Wisbech Voices, sent a plea to Councillor David Oliver to help sort out the mess.
Tom Read wrote: “There are several undesirables who are using this area as a drink/drugs den and simply throwing their empties into the dyke and under the bushes.
“This used to be a picturesque area of our town but is currently more akin to a rubbish tip.
“This problem is not only causing an eyesore it is becoming a breeding ground for rats and other vermin.”
Lindsay Kierman added: “We walked our dogs over the Harecroft Road fields and witnessed the same two drunks in their usual spot, stagger up and walk across the field.
“About 15 minutes later, back they came, staggering carrying a blue carrier bag, back to their usual spot by the dyke. The dyke is swimming after all the rain with empty discarded cider bottles and cans, an absolute eyesore.
“Wisbech Rugby Club put up gates both ends of the fields, to stop the public walking the dogs round and leaving mess behind.
“As responsible dog owners we understand the reason, who would want to play rugby and end up covered in dog poo and human poo for that matter, that’s what it’s coming to.
“A week later we noticed one of the gate posts had been destroyed, we have seen football club lights smashed and items of the Cricket Club smashed too.
“Who is monitoring the spy cameras around the area? Whoever it is are not doing the job. It’s a disgrace.”
Cllr Oliver said: “The land is owned by the National Trust and rented to various organisations who each have the responsibility of keeping their areas clean and tidy.
“This problem I feel needs to be tackled in a different way. I will be talking to Fenland District Council, the National Trust, tenants and the police to find a solution.”
A member of Wisbech Voices said: “Cllr Oliver seems serious in tackling this however I see this problem recurring and there is a longer term issue here which needs to be resolved.”
