Better walking and cycling routes are a must for Wisbech, according to the town’s transport strategy, which found the current system is considered “incoherent” and “unsafe”.

The action plan for Wisbech transport strategy will look at why the existing routes area not used and will devise improvements and measures to improve accessibility.

It will look at what routes are currently offered and review the map of Wisbech cycleways and how they can be improved.

Creating a footpath/cycleway along the line of the March to Wisbech rail-line will also be looked at with the aim of encourage walking and cycling between the town.

But it will also have to take into account the possibility of the rail service being re-instated.

A walking/cycling route from the Agricultural College site area to Meadowgate Lane and the town centre will also be looked at. This route will connect the southeast residential areas with the town centre using part of the existing SUSTRANS route.

Cambridgeshire County Council will look at delivering this route through the Integrated Transport budget and/or S106 monies from developers. It is a medium term project with the aim of being completed by 2020.
