A Wisbech man has been jailed for drink-driving just eight days after his previous conviction for the same offence.

Lucjan Mazur was arrested last Saturday while filling up his friend’s car as a favour.

The 41-year-old, of Leverington Road, had been in court and banned from driving for 40 months on December 4, his third drink-drive related offence in 11 years.

In custody and via video link, he appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Prosecutor Charles Corbett said police officers’ attention was drawn to the car Mazur was driving.

“They turned round and caught up with him at a garage filling up with fuel.

“It was established that he was registered as insured and had been disqualified for failing to provide on December 4 this year.”

Mazur failed a roadside breath test and a later evidential reading showed 48 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath; the legal limit being 35.

He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, drink-driving and having no insurance.

Mr Corbett said, apart from the two convictions this month, the defendant had previous similar offences in 2011 and 2009.

In mitigation, solicitor Julie Murtagh said Mazur had stayed out of trouble for a long period until recently.

She added that he has sought help from an alcohol support organisation and it was a short distance that Mazur had driven.

She said: “His friend asked him to go to the petrol station to fill up his car and he foolishly agreed. It seems no alcohol had been drunk that morning but there was a lot the previous evening.”

District Judge Ken Sheraton told Mazur: “Miss Murtagh tells me that you foolishly accepted your friend’s request to fill up the car with fuel. For being a fool I’m sending you to prison.

“The only credit I can give you today is the fact that you pleaded guilty but on a record of three previous drink-drive related offences it’s going to be 18 weeks for each offence of driving with excess alcohol and driving while disqualified.

“I’m not able to make them consecutive.”

Mazur was also disqualified from driving for six years and told to pay £128 victim surcharge and £85 costs
