Plans are hotting up for Rose Fair, which this year is from June 28 to July 1, when churches, businesses, charitable organisations and the town council become involved in four days of spectacular flower displays, entertainment and tourist attractions.

And organisers say there is still plenty of time to get your entry in to be the carnival queen for the traditional parade.

St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church started this event more than 50 years ago when funds were needed for restoration of the building - you can be any age from 14 to 104.

A local rose grower heard that the church needed funds so he gave hundreds of rose buds to be sold by the church people, this was very successful and when it wasn’t held the following year the townsfolk wanted to know why.

So two years after the selling of rose buds the church decided to make Rose Fair an annual event.

It started by selling roses in the church and strawberry teas in the church hall, each year it grew a little more.

The Flower Festival was born and other churches began to join in, today St Peter and St Paul’s church is famous for its magnificent flower displays and is recognised as the premier flower festival of East Anglia.

Arrangers come from quite an area to be part of the festival, over £3,000 is spent on local and exotic blooms and the arrangers spend almost three days to turn them into, amazingly, fantastic displays that take your breath away.

Trinity Methodist Church, The Baptist church and The United Reform Church all have flower displays as do Peckover House and Octavia Hill’s Birthplace.

In the gardens of St Peter and St Paul’s there are more than 40 stalls selling a variety of goods from fruit and vegetables to cosmetics and toys, there are tombola stalls, cards, locally grown strawberry’s and plants.

Many of the churches serve light refreshments and there are numerous cafes and restaurants round the town.

Wisbech Round Table organise floats and local schools, businesses and organisations dress the floats.

On the Saturday there are two parades one at 11am the other at 2pm.
