WITH the digital switchover looming Caroline Turnbull decided it was time to switch her career from coffee shops to digital aerial and satellite installation.

Chatteris-based Aerial Smiths Ltd is going from strength to strength.

Owner and director Caroline said: "I could see that the market was going to explode because by 2012 there will be nowhere in Britain that you can watch analogue TV.

"I knew if I was going to do it, it would have to be immediately."

Caroline had trained in the hospitality and catering trade, working in hotels, restaurants and airlines before becoming involved in part-owning three coffee shops on the campus of the University of Roehampton in Surrey.

Things changed when she met her future husband Jamie, a digital engineer who fitted a new aerial to Caroline's home. The couple are now married and have a three-year-old daughter.

When Caroline realised the potential to set up her own business she persuaded Jamie to leave the company he had been with for the previous 10 years and work for her.

Caroline had grown up with the idea that it was better to work for herself than others. She said: "I had just grown up that way. My father was an architect and surveyor with his own business and my mum was very clever.

"I grew up thinking I would have my own business and that you never make any money working for someone else."

The company is a licensed installer with full RDI, enabling it to use the digital tick mark.

It is insured to work on properties often considered 'difficult' by many larger companies. These may include listed properties, those in conservation areas or those simply deemed as being inaccessible.
